This bungalow was surrounded by a large mature garden, which was in need of updating. The crazy paving patio was too small for the family's requirements and the paths were not substantial enough for their use. The low stone wall dividing the garden into front and back was crumbling. The clients wanted to retain their mature planting and hedging and a significant amount of lawn. They wanted more division in the garden to introduce a sense of mystery, more curves, a larger patio area to fit their table and chairs and a children's play area with a Wendy house.
The Design
The design centred on a large circular brick paver and slab path going right round the house connecting the front entrance with the patio and back garden and utility area. The area outside the dining room was levelled and a block paver design was introduced to add interest to the new large patio.
Wooden trellis panels and arches divided the garden into different "rooms". A children's play area was created at the back of the garden with Wendy house and low bamboo fencing.
Additional planting was suggested to complement the existing mature planting, with acers, cornus, cotinus, hydrangea quercifolia and fothergilla to provide autumn colour in the acid soil.
Ground cover included bergenias, epimediums and cyclamen and a low winter border at the front of the house included winter flowering heathers, hellebores and dwarf bulbs.
