Large Country Garden

This Victorian house had been extended several times and the garden had been altered in a piecemeal fashion in the 70s and 80s. The owners wished to introduce a more classic style in keeping with the house, but to also include a secluded Mediterranean style patio with tiled walls to adjoin their conservatory, for entertaining. A large redwood conifer dominated the garden and they wanted something to distract the eye or obscure the view of this from the house.

The Design

The design was in a formal classic style taking on the proportions of the house. Four brick circles were joined by natural stone paths linking the various areas of the garden, two circles incorporating planting, one a water feature and one a sundial.

Planting incorporated the existing roses in the garden and the flowering season of the borders was extended with the use of hellebores, iris, lavender, salvias and michaelmas daisies. Wrought iron arches over the paths were covered in honeysuckle and clematis.

The Mediterranean style patio was divided from the rest of the garden using wrought iron screens to match the arches and white painted rendered walls surrounding the rest of the patio were topped with original Spanish tiles

A seating area at the rear of the garden distracted the eye from the redwood tree and woodland planting was introduced to hide fencing and provide interest through the seasons, which included dogwoods, laurels, cotinus, epimediums, bergenias and euphorbias.

The Feedback

"We would like to express our thanks to you for a excellent job, professionally carried out; and all your help in the whole process was very much appreciated. We are now looking forward to a very peaceful summer, with sunshine to enjoy our garden."
