Courtyard Garden

The clients had recently added an extension to the back of their house, making the garden an awkward shape. They wanted to replace their lawn with a courtyard style garden with pond and large dining area, but although they had ideas about their planting, they were unsure about the detail of the hard landscaping.

I was invited initially for a day’s consultation to discuss their ideas and I then produced a scaled coloured plan back at my studio at their request, incorporating the hard landscaping details they wanted.

The Design

Two main features in the garden were retained, a beautiful brick and flint wall, and a brick and flint well which sat remotely in the middle of the lawn. The design introduced block paver and flint areas within the paving to tie these two features in, together with slate and sandstone colour paving to provide interest and divide the garden into different areas. The design was set at a forty five degree angle to make the garden seem bigger.

A formal pond and rill were introduced by the well within view of the French doors and areas of planting were interspersed between the paved areas to add softness. A larger paved area provided ample room for outdoor dining.

The Feedback

"We knew what we wanted to include, but we could not make it work. We are very pleased with the finished garden and overall service, the garden seems bigger than before and is very easy to maintain."
